Shapers

Glyndyn Ringrose

Ringrose

Ringa has the ultimate surfing experience to back his shaping of high performance boards.  Ringa spent two years in the highest form of world surfing competition, reaching 17th on the World Championship Tour in 1999, surfing and experimenting with his own designs in the highest form of competitive surfing.  He uses this experience, along with almost 20 years of shaping, to develop some of the best high performance boards for a broad range of surfers, including some current WQS competitors.

Ringa’s Current Winner:

Length: 6’2”
Width: 18 ½”
Thickness: 2 ¼”
Tail: Rounded Square
Rails: Medium to boxy
Bottom: Full single into slight double into tiny V
Features: Predominant hip and wider rounded square tail
Comments: “My latest all-rounder.  Wider tail gives more planing area for more squirt, with a flatter tail to help”.

Greg Hogan

Hoges has been mowing foam for over thirty-five years.  Whether it be a high performance “Carl” model, or fat wave busting mini mal, Hoges produces the right board to suit your style of surfing.  Priding himself on providing the perfect board for each individual surfer, Hoges puts all his experience into every board to come out of his shaping bay.

Hoges’ current winners:

“Fun Fun Fun”

Length: 6’10”
Width: 21”
Thickness: 2 ½”
Tail: Swallow
Rails: Medium refined
Bottom: Single to double with reverse vee
Features: Nice even plan shape, extra nose and tail area
Comments: “Sick of riding boards that don’t float, catch waves, were made for someone half your age? Then this is the board for you. A big fish that rides a lot smaller than it looks, yet loses nothing in paddle power, stability or wave catching ability”.

“The Summer Fish”

Length: 6’0”
Width: 19 ¾”
Thickness: 2 ¼”
Tail: Wide Diamond
Rails: Boxy
Bottom: Single to double with slight reverse vee
Features: Hip, plenty of nose and tail area for when the waves lack power
Comments: “A fish designed as an excellent second board to get you inspired when the waves don’t”.

Neil Luke

An exert from Neil’s website:
For the love of Kneeboardriding sometime in 1970 when I first rode a wave kneeling down I couldn’t believe how fast…. How close to the wave the distinct advantage… it was great!!! I love it! It’s so much fun! So, I devoured everything I could find about Kneeboard riding and of course, touched by the GEORGE GREENOUGH influence round house figure eight cutbacks on those old surf flicks, slumped in the tube at Arrow Beach, filming out of the barrel at Lennox. And do you know what, after State, National & 4 x International surfing achievements I still love it.

Neil’s current winner:

“The Freak”

Length: 6’0”
Width: 24”
Thickness: 2 1/2”
Tail: Double Flyer Swallow
Rails: Medium
Bottom: Single to double, vee through tail
Features: Chined rails and bevelled bottom
Comments: Explosive rail changes, super quick reaction, amazing through the tube.

Terry Klemm

Co-founder of Klemm-Bell surfboards, Terry needs no introduction to those who know the history of Australian surfing, and is a legend in the surfing industry with his forty-plus years experience. Terry’s hand-shaped surfboards, from classic triple stringer mal’s with nose and tail blocks to high performance down the line single fins, are available exclusively through Island Surfboards.

Slim Hyndman

Boards

Boards

Below are some of the more popular styles of boards to come out of the Island Surfboards Factory.  The boards are made with the highest quality materials, and will vary depending on your height, weight, ability, conditions and more.  Use the following as a guide to your options, but remember that the best option is to chat to one of our shapers to determine what is the best board for you.  From shortboards, funboards, guns, mini mals, as well as the new Island Classic Mal range (available in triple stringer style), Island has the board to suit your needs.  Combine this with the world renowned kneeboards of Neil Luke, and  all your new board dreams can come true.  Island recomends FCS and Futures fin systems, as well as the option of glass in fins.  Also take a look at our epoxy range, including Webber, South Point and NSP ranges, all available in-store.  Custom orders can be initiated by clicking on the custom order link.

STANDARD FISH img_6319

Ideal for your summer beach breaks, and waves that lack the power for your normal short board.  Extra tail and nose area, with a flatter rocker, provide the glide over dead spots in a wave, but still remain loose to come off the top.

Dimensions –

Length: 5’8” – 6’6”
Width: 19”+
Thickness: 2” – 2 ½”
Tail: Swallow, Diamond

QUAD FISH

Similar to the standard fish, the quad fish gives the surfer the added option of changing between the thruster set-up and a quad fin combo, or even the twin fin set up.  This allows variation in drive, speed and directional changes, and coupled with flyers makes great variation within one board.

Dimensions –

Length: 5’8” – 6’6”
Width: 19”+
Thickness: 2” – 2 ½”
Tail: Swallow, RSquare

FRESH FISH

Back in the early 70’s Skip Fry’s original fish became a popular alternative.  Since then many people have tried to improve on this design ala Tommy Peterson with his Curren-inspired craft.  But now Neil Luke has bought his Fresh Fish into the 21st century with a combination of old and innovative ideas.  With its chined rails, and combinations of vees and concaves through the bottom make this an exciting machine.  With its Future’s Rasta Keel fins or classic glassed in timber veneer D fins this board’s performance will open your eyes and mind to the large range of waves this board can surf.

Dimensions –

Length: 5’8” – 6’6”
Width: 20”+
Thickness: 2 ½”
Tail: Deep Swallow

SHORT BOARD

For all waves in all areas, the stock standard short board takes on many forms.  Easily tailored to suit any surfer’s needs, the all rounder is a must in any quiver.  With complete variation options in plan shape, tail shape, fins, concaves and rocker, the perfect short board is waiting for you at Island.

Dimensions –

Length: 5’10” – 7’0”
Width: 18”+
Thickness: 2” – 2 ½”
Tail: Square, RSquare, Rounded Pin

GUNS

For big waves, a bigger board is required.  Whether your planning to charge Vicco coast slabs, or preparing for the next Indo trip, we can design a gun to get into, and hold the line through big barrels, while allowing big open face carves.

Dimensions –

Length: 6’8” – 7’6”
Width: 18” – 19 ½”
Thickness: 2” – 2 ½”
Tail: RSquare, Rounded Pin, Swallow

SCHLONG

As its name is derived, the SCHLONG (Short-Longboard), has been a revolution for Island.  Giving the paddle power and wave catching ability of a Mini Mal, with the manouverability of a short board, the Schlong is a great option for novice surfers looking to develop their turns, or the competent surfer who is looking for the ultimate cruising machine.

Dimensions –

Length: 7’2” – 8’6”
Width: 20” – 23”
Thickness: 2 ½” – 3”
Tail: RSquare, Rounded Pin

MINI MAL

The ultimate first board, the original Mini Mal gives the float and stability to learn the art of surfing.  The best way to develop your surfing is to catch waves, and the added area and volume in a Mini Mal gives you every opportunity to catch as many waves as you can.

Dimensions –

Length: 6’8” – 8’0”
Width: 20” – 23”
Thickness: 2 3/8” – 3”

PERFORMANCE MAL

For the Mal rider who wants to push the limits of Mal riding to the surfer who wants to catch all the waves.  Island Mal’s are becoming increasingly popular with the Mal riding community here and abroad.  Combining old techniques with new designs, Island have found the winning combination.  Complete with a top line fibreglass fin, your performance mal will be cherished into the future.
