Those pads are heated by a removable lithium battery pack, about the size of an old school mobile phone that's positioned on the right side of your ribcage. It's rechargeable, either with a household wall plug or by using the included cigarette lighter adaptor. You can fully charge it in about two hours and it'll give you about 3 hours of warmth. Once turned on it fires up pretty quickly. There are two heat levels, high and low. To turn it on, you press a button on the battery pack at your side; once for high (which is about 55 degrees Celsius) and you'll feel one vibrating pulse. Or hit it twice and you'll get two vibrating pulses and the low heat setting (about 45 degrees Celsius). To turn it off, simply hold it down until the thing vibrates six times. It's actually pretty darn simple. The vibrations are so you can tell which setting it is on when the vest is under a wetsuit and the light isn’t visible And here's why this thing is able to keep you warm and potentially surfing longer: Basically, one of the main jobs of your bloodstream is to carry warmth around your body. When you get cold, your body automatically conserves heat by keeping the warm blood flow going to your core around your vital organs and flowing to your brain. That leaves your hands, feet and extremities out in the cold, so to speak. The lower back/kidney area is a spot where the blood vessels come close to the skin. By heating that area, the blood is also warmed and is then carried around your body. Consequently, your feet and hands feel warmer because the body isn't being so stingy with the warm blood.
